Dane Reynolds paddled out at secret spot over the holidays and proceeded to go bananas on some fun looking rights.

I had my camera but left my good lenses in Japan, so I dug an old zoom lens with broken autofocus out of the beach house closet and tried to make the best of it.

The peanut gallery was in full effect, running down the trail to get front row seats with beers in hand.

I've had my camera waterhousing sitting in my closet collecting dust for way to long, I finally had the chance to jump in and take some shots at PK during a recent evening. I suited up and jumped in the water, unfortunately a couple fishermen had their lines in the shorebreak right where the light was the best. As I flopped around on the inside dodging fish hooks and dirty looks, throwing my camera into some pits, I ended up getting some good shots.

Some photos from a recent day at Goto. For about a month the sand piled up against the side of this concrete wall creating a good righthander. I risked soaking my camera and walked out to take a few shots.

There is usually a crew of fishermen on the wall, catching fish and dodging set waves that wash over the end.

Once the sun set I tried using my flash with limited success...

We went on a mission out to the NihonKai(Sea of Japan) the other day. I have to admit I was a bit skeptical of scoring waves in any 'sea'. But, around this time every year storms begin to spin on the Korean Peninsula and throw a huge fetch towards the west coast of Japan. In winter you have to hike over snow covered beaches to get to the surf but late Oct is still nice and warm. At 2am the crew assembled for an overnight drive out west, after 4 hours we arrived with the sunrise.

The first spot we checked out was a bit junk with the onshore winds but the boys were still in good spirits...

Finally we took some good advice and headed to a more protected zone and found some offshore beachbreak loveliness.

For about 4 hours it was on, great waves and friendly crowd. This setup was sort of a warmer central california sandbar setup, minus the angry locals and sharks.

Typhoon Roke made a direct hit in Fukude/Hamamatsu on Wednesday, winds up to 80mph and 25ft surf.

Flying tree limbs and pieces of metal sheds prevented me from going outside and capturing any peak action, but I filmed these 2 quick clips from the safety of my place. I thought the ol wagon R might fly away at any second...

The normally passable beach road in Tenryu. Usually the water line is 100meters to the left, but at some point the storm surge hurled all this junk over the seawall.

It's Friday now, the wind has calmed down and the surf is flat!

Typhoon waves

There has been some good surf recently from the typhoons, here are a bunch of random pics from over the past month.

This the coastal road driving towards Shizuoka. There is almost a surfable wave here underneath this bridge with Mt. Fuji in the background.

When it is too big for the beaches in front of Fukude and the winds are out of the east, this protected left point down in Irago turns on.

Around the corner from the left point is the more exposed coastline, a little too big to surf this day.

Same spot here in Omaezaki as the photos in the previous post.

Most of the waves that break on typhooon swells are difficult to find, localized, or both. Gun-san is a local everywhere in Shizuoka and he hooked me up by taking me out to a lesser known rivermouth setup. He and his group of friends have been surfing this area for years and they have it dialed.

The rivermouth we went to had a fun setup, lefts on one side and rights on the other in front of the driftwood locals shack.

Another rivermouth setup, this one was a bit muddier. There was a crew all over it in the morning here but by noon here it was empty.

And back to PK, once the swell backed down a bit. The sand setup has been good here, just mind the tetrapod shorebreak.

Typhoon #6 has churned up some gigantic surf here, I took a looooong road trip to find a more protected wave, and wound up stumbling into some rivermouth perfection. This point only turns on when its big and the swell wraps into the Suruga Bay. The view from the lineup while riding this wave is incredible, with Mt. Fuji towering in the background as the wave wraps down the point. However, my camera is not waterproof so I have no photographic proof!
By chance, Nori-san from Cojo Surfboards stopped by on his way to Fuji and snapped a couple cell phone pics.

Last weekend we had some typhoon surf, out front was huge and out of control, so Tasuke and I loaded up his truck and took a trip to a more protected beach up the coast. My canon g11 came along for the ride.

(note to camera owners, taking your camera from inside an air-conditioned car straight into 90F humidity will cause condensation on the lens! but it can make for an interesting shot)

After surfing a tetrapod wedge wave with "rocket take-offs" we cruised around the beaches near Shizunami. This sign speaks for itself.

No menacing face in the waves in real life.

I came across a place that had caught my eye a few times before. There are often many strange sites in Japan but this one was especially unique. If you have ever wondered where arcade games go when they die (c'mon really who hasn't), wonder no longer.

These photos are a few weeks old, the cherry blossoms only last for about one week in April here, so you have to time it perfectly or may miss out. By the time I made it out to take some photos, about half of the blossoms had already fallen but there were still some good spots.

These first few photos are from a park near the town of Tenryu, about 45 minutes inland from the coast.

This structure is actually a slide for kids that weaves down through the trees off the side of a hill, as much as I wanted to try it out I held back.

Springtime Surf

Here are a few random pics from the past few weeks. We have had some good surf recently, but I have been a bit more focused on surfing than shooting photos.

These above 2 are from PK, or Komamba, which has been firing about once a week in between flat spells. You can either sit up top and catch the right that peels off the tetrapods (and most likely get burned - 1st photo) or sit inside and get the more hollow waves that swing inside (2nd photo), just have to make sure to kick out before impaling yourself on the tetra-shorepound.

Spring time, its finally warm enough to get back on the bike to scout out local sandbars. Looking right (top photo) and to the left (bottom photo) from the bike trail.

Mafuji Hike 真富士山

Another hike from a couple weeks ago, late March. This mountain is called Mafuji (not The Mt. Fuji) and starts up in the hills behind Shizuoka city. After a steep 30 min drive up a one lane road from the Abekawa river, we parked the car and basically hiked straight up the rest of the mountain through the trees and a creek bed. Once at the top of the ridge there are 2 separate peaks with great views of Mount Fuji and the Suruga Bay.

There was still some snow on the ground as we were up at about 4,500 feet, making for a slippery climb. I received a few funny looks from other fellow hikers because I was only wearing shorts, luckily I have hairy legs.

Once at the top there were great views of Mt Fuji and the surrounding area.

Maybe when the snow melts we will tackle the real Mt. Fuji.

Hakkosan Hike

Even though CNN's Anderson Cooper was telling me I would certainly die if I stepped outside, we made it out for a hike up to the top of Hakkosan mountain yesterday. With everything going on here in Japan it was nice to get away from the tv and the coast for a little while.

Again, asking for directions from the locals to find the trailhead.

Our prefecture, Shizuoka, is famous for tea. Near the coast all you see are rice fields, but once you get into the hills and mountains there are rows and rows of tea leaves.

Japanese ceder trees (i think) cover the mountain here. Easy to get lost in.

The top of the mountain is over 800m, supposed to take 2 hours but it took us about 2.5, all uphill. Almost to the top is this clear cut area, looks like the mountain side was shaved by a giant razor.

On a related note, we have been watching the news about the earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear power plant everyday. We are still OK down here in Shizuoka prefecture, well to the southwest of the quake, tsunami, and power plant. We are keeping the people in the Tohoku area affected by the quake, tsunami and power plant in our thoughts. I have never been up to that area but from what I hear it is similar to central CA with a lot of beautiful coastline, fishing towns and tons of local surfers, all affected by the tsunami. Ganbatte Nihon!

Koyo season here has already ended, but luckily I still had some photos on my other camera to show. These are from a mini-hike up in the hills above Mori-town.

We got a little lost and needed some help from some friendly country-folk.

The sign makes it look easy enough, but a landslide took out the trail past the first waterfall and we couldn't get past it.

Autumn season in Japan is famous for Koyo, the color changing of the leaves. As a native southern Californian, I am unfamiliar with such extreme changes in the seasons and the extreme color change in all of the trees. The other weekend we checked out a spot up in the mountains called Shirakurakyo to spot some koyo. Our timing was a bit early, the best color change wouldn't happen for another week or so, but there were a few nice views anyhow.

This blue shack and red bridge are part of a very picturesque bustop. Only comes twice an hour, but not a bad place to hang out for the bus.

I didn't have a tripod with me, but I was able to prop my camera on a wooden rail to grab a slower shutter speed shot of the waterfall.

Not only are the Koyo leaves beautiful, they're also delicious!

Bike Ride

Perfect fall weather and small waves here lately, I took the mamachari bike for a ride down the coast along with my new small Canon G11.

My glorious chariot, only one speed but no hills so no problem.

During the fall here these guys take over around my town, every walk or bike ride through the tree and you are guaranteed to get a couple spider webs in your face.

This guy was having his own racing practice in the river, taking his pwc to the limits.

At last ended up at this fun wave I've been surfing lately. There is a solid concrete wall that extends out into the water, catches small east swells and throws a fun wedge off of the wall. Kind of reminds me of surfing in a swimming pool. Only danger is trying not to get hooked by a fisherman.

A new fish from Nori-san and some new custom fins from Gun-san. Gun-san uses prints that he finds on random bandanas to glass into some uniquely designed fins. This board is a super fun fish modeled after my J7 fish (which was modeled after Sterdog's blue angel Arrow). Bird is over here visiting and he is blowing minds all over the beaches of Fukude on this board.

Shibuya Crossing

The famous Shibuya crossing in Tokyo. According to the omnipotent wikipedia, over 2 million pass through the Shibuya station every day. Most of those pass through the scramble intersection. Plenty of action here, a great place to people watch.

Note the Starbucks on the corner, a great place to enjoy an overpriced coffee and watch the human river.

The other day I took a bike ride down the river because the waves were completely flat. Usually I have my camera, but today all I had was my tiny Ipod nano. Inspired by the magical video clips flowing daily out of the hit blog site TheBlurfCurve, I tested out the video camera function on my Ipod nano to grab some clips using my hat as a tripod. I then had to remember how to use imovie to throw this together. Please enjoy this ghetto fabulous river scenery.

This late breaking news is a few weeks old, but I participated in a surf contest a few weeks ago at a fun beachbreak down the road, the "Cojo Cup." Kind of like the infamous Burning Bowls, but with Bento lunchboxes and Asahi instead of Hotdogs and Budweiser. Nori-san of Cojo surfboards gets all of his team riders together for the contest every year, this year I was thrown into the "riders cup" division.

This is Nori-san, he shapes Cojo (yes named after the ranch) boards, recently he has been letting me try all kinds of test shapes, from shortboards to EPS/Styrofoam 4-fin rocket fish boards.

I ended up winning my division and taking home the coveted trophy and a cool 10 grand (yen). The prize money went straight to celebratory beer and sushi.

Rainy Season Left Bowls

The other day we had some great surf in the neighborhood, I ran into Pedro, a photographer from Brazil who is living in Japan. We exchanged info and he was kind enough to put this photo of me on his blog which you can see Here. The waves were great this day but it is the middle of rainy season here and we were surfing near a major rivermouth, so the water was a bit brown and you had to dodge the occasional log, tire or dead bird floating in the lineup.

Sandy Tetrapod Nuggets

The sand has been filling in at all the right places around here recently. Recently a little nook down the coast has been lighting up during the bigger windswell days, with a right that bends around the corner of a tetrapod jetty. Each wave ends about 6 inches of water, so if you go down you will be picking sand out of your crevices for a while. 2 out of every 3 would close out at the end, so I had a lot of sand picking to do. Unagi-san (website coming soon) was set up down the beach with his 500mm one morning taking photos of everyone, including myself. Here are a few stills, more sequences to come.

Shimoda Part 2 (of 2)

The Ramaru Dinner! Hot dog, hamburger and coffee! You must be asking for some serious heartburn if you take down all three of these at once. We opted for the conveyor belt sushi restaurant next door, easy choice to make.

Shimoda Part 1

Took a road trip down to the town of Shimoda, a small town at the bottom of the Izu penninsula. Wasn't exactly sure what to expect out there, but I was pleasantly surprised with the town, the landscape, the beaches, and more importantly the surf.
Much of the landscape reminded me of a mix of big sur, carmel, and hawaii, only without all of the sharks and angry locals.

Not my photo, this is a screenshot from google earth, a great way to scout out new areas.

Driving north through Shizuoka, Fuji-san towers over most of the surrounding landscape. This is not a great photo of Fuji but I had to grab a quick pic of the view from gas station along the main highway.

Spring has Sprung

Has it been a month since my last post? Seems like yesterday...
Don't go any further if you dislike the color yellow at all.

The weather is warming and the fields are blossoming here in Japan, in the next few weeks we will see the sakura trees begin to blossom, for now we have these wild yellow flowers of which I don't know the name.

I wasn't the only one getting my flower photographing on, I counted about 30 people with cameras of all shapes and sizes, along with lenses, tripods, straps, memory cards etc. This field was very well documented this day.

The owners of the field built a handy scaffolding to give everyone a better view, from a distance it resembled a boat with passengers floating on the field.

One interesting thing I noticed was the the industrial gravel pit located a few feet from the field. Everything seemed serene and peaceful as long as you were looking away from the gravel pit.

My retinas were burning after a solid dose of bright yellow for an hour, so I hiked the trail around the lake and reacquainted myself with some old camera tricks.

Yes, it snows in Japan. On the west coast of Japan, storms come marching in from Korea and the Sea of Japan carrying plenty of cold air and moisture and dump snow all over the west coast. Bad for surfing but great for skiing and snowboarding, and "snowboogieboarding."

I went out to take a leisurely stroll down the street, it turned into a slow march through a blizzard.

10 minutes later, the weather cleared for a bit and I made to a shrine in the neighborhood. Nobody else was around at the time, so I had a some time to myself before my hands started to go numb and I hiked back to the house.

Last light speed blur photos from Lakey Pipe. There was not enough light to capture sharp wave photos, so I was panning and moving the camera to get some more interesting colors and textures out the waves. Out of about one hundred shots I ended up with these three that I liked, yeay digital.

In no particular order here are some more photos from Indo, all of these are from the island of Sumbawa at an area known as Lakey Peak. Every kind of wave ranging from fun rippable walls to death reef slabs (depending on the tide) can be found withing a 10k stretch of coastline here. Nothing else out here except a few places to stay and eat and nothing to do but surf, eat and explore the low tide reef, ... and kick Bird's a$$ in cards while sipping Bintangs.

It is safer than it looks. Big tide swings here, this is taken at low tide, high tide sees waves breaking underneath the tower with water coming almost up to the first deck.

Typhoon Melor (#18)

Typhoon Melor (#18 in Japan) made landfall a few nights ago here in Shizuoka/Aichi and was raging outside for a couple days. The days leading up to the typhoon were rainy and gray, but the waves were pretty good. I have experienced some bad weather in California before, but I have a new respect for the power of these tropical typhoons (or hurricanes or cyclones depending on your location). There have been times when I have been been scared in the ocean, but this was the first time that just walking outside has seemed life threatening to me. The worst of the storm hit in the middle of the night with 70-90 mph winds, making for a very sleepless night.

Before the typhoon made landfall, I took trip down the coast to explore some different surf spots.

I found many miles of surf like this, gray and offshore with nobody around and much bigger than it looked.

This is a photo from left that is closer to home near the local rivermouth. Mostly closeouts, but every once and awhile a gem would come through. Again, much bigger than it looks, no humans around to give it some perspective.

This is one of the more well known spots on the coast, Tahara Long Beach. There are a few professional surf contest held here each year, since it seems to be a consistent wave. This day was big, but still pretty manageable. This wave is very similar to Morro Bay, minus the warm water river from the power plant.

Unsurfed slab #1. Fun wave to look at, but probably painful to surf. I was waiting up on the cliff for a Japanese charger to take it on, but nobody showed. I thought about paddling out for 1/10th of second then thought better of it. Not to sound like a broken record, but it is bigger than it looks...

Me, about to go storm riding the morning after the typhoon passed. If I look a bit tired it is because I was up all night listing to the wind scream and waiting for our apartment to blow away.

A few gems made it through the chaos, but this was more of a day for watching.

Nature, meet man...

This used to be a bike trail, quite a few pine needles were shaken loose from the matsu trees.

Toyohama looked semi-surfable, nobody around, just one car in the lot.

This is my favorite check spot. Just a random construction along the side of the bike trail to give you a view over the pine.

After two days of searching, I found my rivermouth sandbar perfection, perfect and peeling 6 inch drainers. I mind-surfed myself silly for hours, it was fantastic.

One of the most incredible things about the storm systems here is the speed in which they come and go, one day will be gray, rainy, windy and huge out-of-control surf, and the next day will look like this, calm and glassy and inviting.

I will be off visiting the Island of the Gods for a little while, taking many photographs, but probably without the means to upload and share the photos. As soon as I get back online I will share the goods.

Bridges, Waves, Trails, Signs

As I mentioned in my last post, my camera has decided to stop working, but the good news is I have a replacement camera in my hands now and I had a chance to go through some photos from the past month. I picked out a few that caught my attention, here they are in no particular order...

Traffic trails on highway 150, the main coastal road that runs through town. If you squint your eyes you can see the McDonalds golden arches.

Not these golden arches... here are a few views of Higashi-Bashi (east bridge) at sunset. This is one of the main bridges into the town, follow the road straight to the beach and you end up at Higashi-Bashi the surfspot.

When the west winds pick up, everybody heads for Toyohama since the jetties here protect the surf from the strong wind. Notice the stadium seating jetty, perfect for jumping off into the lineup if your to lazy to paddle out.

Two photos from a bike ride towards the west, along the pacific coastal bike trail. This trail stretches for miles and miles along the coast, I've explored about 2 hours in each direction but there is plenty more to do. Many stretches of the trail look like this with empty beach and nobody around.

You don't have to speak Japanese to get the point of this warning sign.

RIP Canon 20D

Well, after 3 and a half years use and abuse, my trusty Canon 20d camera has officially died. Right here is where you would normally see a few photos...

...but as you can see I take terrible photos with a broken camera. The good news is that I am in Japan, ground zero for everything camera and electronic related, so it will be very easy to find a replacement. This is the last photo-less blog that I will ever post, hopefully.

Super Typhoon Choi-wan

Super Typhoon Choi-wan came and went bringing some huge surf to the coast here, Saturday was probably 15 feet and fairly clean conditions, but not much shape around here. Some of the outer sandbars were breaking, but I didn't see any takers willing to paddle out (or anybody on the beach at all for that matter). I will come clean right now and admit that I wussed out and I was not willing to charge the outer sandbars alone. Somewhere in Japan was going off I am sure, but my local knowledge is limited, maybe next time I can get to a point or reef that can handle the size. But I was out there the next moring when it was a more manageble 4-6 ft.

California, I think this thing is headed into the northern Pacific then coming your way, hopefully you will get some waves as well.

One of those mornings where you can hear the surf and smell the salt in the air before you even see the ocean.

This would have been a fun surfable wedge, but unfortunately there is an unfinished skaffolding/pier coming off of the jetty here, so at the end of each ride there would have been a chance of being impaled on the pilings.

Tetrapods, Eagerly awaiting their new homes in a lineup near you. As I have mentioned before, from the coastline that I have seen, Japan has more concrete structures developed along the shoreline than I have seen anywhere in the world. When the waves come up, some interesting nature vs man-made object battles take place.

This was the only surfable wave I saw along the coast this day. But the currents and closeouts kept everybody out. It is much bigger than it looks. Ok, I am all out of excuses as to why I didn't paddle out but at least I lived to post photos for everybody to look at.

Skate n Surf

Akihito, our new local friend and unofficial tour guide took me to one of the many skateboard ramps in town after the beach cleanup and I tried as hard as I could to not break any bones. Its been a few years since I have skated a ramp, so I was a little bit shakey. Akihito spilled some blood, but there were no other casualties.

This is how I spent most of my time on the ramp.

A couple days later, we took a road trip up the coast to get some waves. We ended up at this spot with a concrete jetty/walkway that seems like it was built just for surfers to run out and jump off of. Here I am asking for some directions...

Gun-San, Beach Town

A few days ago, my surf session ended in one tragic accident when I snapped off a fin of my board, my only board. My disappointment was short lived, however, once I took in my board for a repair at the local surf shop and met the owner, Gun-san. Gun-san's shop, Beach Town, is ground zero for the surf scene in Fukude, and Gun-san himself is a classic character and an expert surfboard fin designer.

We were invited to the monthly beach cleanup the next morning at the local beach break to pick up a boatload of plastic bottles and other debris.

Not only did Gun-san hook me up with a speedy repair, he also lent me ...Lost speed demon board for a few days so I could still get in the water.

Beach Bike Trail

I have been lagging a bit with taking photos as of late, but today I took my camera on an afternoon ride down the coast. There is a nice bike trail that stretches along the whole coast here, this is only a portion of it that weaves through the pine forests with beach access points every mile or so. Some of the sights...

If you are on the beach in these parts you are either fishing or surfing, or both.

The surf scene is alive and kicking in Japan, especially on weekends. Everyone packs into their vans and parks it at the beach from sunrise to sunset.

Towards the Tenryu rivermouth, the pines gave way to open space and plenty of wind turbines and the lighthouse.

Some lefts peeling into the rivermouth. I have a good feeling about the potential for surf here, the setup resembling a reverse Santa Barbara sandspit.

Morning Commute

Here are some photos taken this morning on the walk to the beach from our new place in Hamamatsu. About 7 minutes from the front door to the sand by foot, 2 minutes by skateboard, 1 minute by bike. There is plenty to check out in this new town and new area, and I just scored a mountain bike, so I will be exploring plenty.

Sign on the way to the beach, I believe the translation reads, Warning, do not stroll the shorebreak fully clothed, you may be caught inside by a Tsunami and attacked by a cross-eyed catfish with eyebrows.

According to my personal translator, "Hama" means beach and "matsu" means pine tree, like these that line the beach.

But most importantly, WAVES! There is a huge stretch of beach here, with miles and miles of beachbreak. There were plenty of fun peaks to choose from this morning, leftovers from a tropical storm making its way up north. Plenty of fishing going on as well, with boats patrolling the outside and fisherman in 4wd jeeps spread out along the shoreline.

Well, not much new to add today, but here are a few random pics from the past month. Moving this weekend out to an apartment practically on the beach in Hamamatsu, a nice city near some good surf on the East Coast of Japan, in between Tokyo and Nagoya. Shrine in the foothills of the Tateyama mountains. Natural spring water flows abundantly here and is incorporated into shine, you can drink the water here straight out of the ground and it tastes better than anything you could ever buy in a bottle.

Rain drops on a leaf, my attempt at macro photography. For any photo geeks, I tried to to reverse mount two lenses together to make an extreme macro lens, I think I should just pony up the $ for a good macro lens.

NASHI

Today, I had the privilege to tag along with Yoshimura family in their Nashi orchard during their seasonal harvest. Nashi is a Japanese Pear, bigger and a little harder than a standard pear. Yoshimura-san has several acres of Nashi orchard in Toyama and was nice enough to let me tag along and take photos in the morning before I was put to work.

Once the nashi are picked, they are sorted on the back of trailer by size and quality. The crates are then loaded onto the back of a mini pickup to take into the factory down the street.

Every step that you took in the orchard would disturb rabid pack of these guys, known as Semi. These Semi resemble giant flying cockroaches, but they are pretty harmless. After being bombarded by them all morning and having them fly into my head, face and mouth, I felt like I had bonded with them. Sometimes they would excrete a liquid as they buzzed my head. According to the workers, it was pee, but I should not worry because they pee honey.

"Put the Gaijin to work!" After taking about 200 photos, it was time for me to put down the camera and pick up a crate to earn my keep. I'm not sure what my official title was for the next couple of hours, but every time one of the crates filled up, it was my duty to haul it over the back of the trailer for sorting and bring an empty crate back out to the crew.

This factory is just a short tractor ride down the road. All of the local orchard owners bring in their nashi to the factory for sorting and shipping.

The whole operation here really brought to mind the phrase and the meaning of Itadakimasu!, and the whole notion that each time you sit down for meal, you should consider all of the effort that went into growing, harvesting, sorting, packaging, distributing and preparing that food that you are about to eat. Many hands took part getting that food to your table, so give thanks and keep that in mind when you are about to chow down!

Kurobe Gorge

On a whim, we decided to head up into a little town called Uchiyama at the base of the Tateyama mountains because we heard that there was a brewery with a tour and a tasting of a the various types of beer. Mmmm... Beer. Once we got to the town, however, we couldn't find the brewery but discovered this cool little rickety open-air train that runs up the Kurobe Gorge, a river-carved valley that runs behind the Tateyama mountain range. The train hugs the side of the hill and runs up about 10 miles through some unbelievable scenery and up to the end of the tracks where you can find hot springs, jumping monkeys, and some hiking trails. Unfortunately we only had about a 1/2 hour at the top because we had to catch the last train back, but the train ride itself was fun, and I plan to make it back, next time better prepared to make a day or two out of it, and to find the brewery.

Hanging off the side of a moving train made it hard to compose a decent shot, but these were taken on the way up. I plan making it back for some hikes to take advantage of the views.

End of the road, just enough time to explore for 30 min, then make it back for the last train down.

Gohyaku rakan

This is an interesting place here in Toyama called Gohyaku rakan (500 rakan, or disciples of Buddha). The 500 rakan statues are situated on a hillside overlooking a temple. We had a hard time finding it because it is pretty hidden in the hills with just a dark stairway leading to the site. Every one of the 500 rakan has a slightly different expression although many are weathered and most of the detail is lost. I was going to do a portrait series of all of them, but ended up getting attacked by mosquitos every time I paused to take a photo. This place definitely had an eerie vibe to it, not scary, but very silent and dark, with the feeling that all 500 rakan were watching me as I walked around.

Went for a little ride today on the family cruiser into the nearby mountians. Highlights included getting lost multiple times, bamboo forests, mosquito attacks, and almost crashing while trying to negotiate downhill roads with camera in one hand and handlebar with only front brakes in the other hand.

Waterfail?

Took a trip into the mountains today to do some hiking and check out the Shomyo waterfall in the Tateyama mountains. I have seen a few photos of this waterfall before and I was pretty excited to get out there with my camera. It was sunny as we made our way up the valley, but once we got to the waterfall is was socked in with clouds. It was still a very beautiful area even if the visibility was a bit low, here is what what we saw when we got there...

Only the bottom 10m of the waterfall was visible, but this is what it looks like when the weather cooperates...

I will definitely be back as soon as the weather clears.

Road Trip! Part 3

FINALLY WAVES!
Woke up this morning in Omaezaki and noticed the wind was howling onshore, not good. The good news was that our Minshuku was located on the inside of a bay, so a quick drive around the corner and the wind was looking much better.

Grabbed the camera a took a few shots but I had to get out there asap.

This stretch of beach was similar to ocean beach in San Francisco, but trunks instead of wetsuits. I surfed 3 sessions this day until my eyeballs were sunburned.

Road Trip! Part 2

Woke up and made the drive along the coast in the morning, here are some more images from around the Irago Cape. Very steep cliffs and dramatic scenery around here, reminded me of a warmer Big Sur.

WAVES!!! Stumbled upon this spot during a surf check. From what I have seen so far, Japan has the most developed beaches I have ever seen with all kinds of jetties, breakwalls and bizarre cement seawalls covering most areas. At this spot, the swell would squeeze through these breakwalls and create super fun wedges all up and down the beach that broke hard in about 1 foot of water.

Further down the coast we came to this spot in Tahara. It is the site of a few surf contests each year including an ASP longboard contest that finished the day before we showed up. The waves were decent but a bit slow, fun on a fish or longboard. The sand in the foreground is about 200 degrees, I had to do a mad sprint from the car to the water.

Not even sure what the name of this beach was, but it had a pretty decent left coming in.

We made our way down to Omaezaki in the Shizuoka Prefecture. It turned out to be perfect timing since they were having their Hanabi show on the night we arrived. Vendors were lined up and down the road selling every kind of food you could imagine and then some.

Road Trip! Part 1

Headed out to the east coast for a few days. The main highway that connects Toyama to the east coast runs straight through some serious mountains and some very very long tunnels.

Made it out to the Irago cape, Aichi Prefecture, just before sunset. It was 1 foot offshore shorebreak, perfect for a swim to rinse off the road.

Just like the Wedge but 1 foot instead of 20.

We stayed in a traditional Minshuku. Very simple as you can see. They measure the room size by the number of tatami mats that are laid on the floor. We were living large in this size "10" room.

Hanabi

The japanese word for fireworks is Hanabi, and this was one of the biggest Hanabi shows I have ever seen. August 1 is the anniversary date of an American attack on the city of Toyama during WWII, every year on this date the whole city comes out to the river to watch an hour long Hanabi show and BBQ it up. It was raining constantly for days before the show and it stopped just a few hours before the fireworks began, then poured again after the show stopped.

Shirakawa-go

The historic and incredible village of Shirakawa-go is one of Japan's UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The town is located in the Shogawa river valley, basically in the middle of a mountain range. The road out to this town was amazing, we drove through about 20km of tunnels to get there, then all of a sudden you burst out of the end of the tunnels in the middle of this lush river valley.

The village is famous for its thatched roofs that are built to withstand the heavy snowfalls in winter.

Kenrokuen Garden

We took a daytrip to the Kenrokuen garden, a huge garden in Kanazawa. It was hard to take a bad photograph here, everywhere you look there were trees, ponds, bridges and tea houses. The entire garden covers 25 acres, with little trails and pathways that wind through the whole place. The ugly photo below is a Koi that came out of the water to try and take a bite of my camera.

The phrase itadakimasu (ee-tah-dah-kee-mahss) is said before every meal to annouce that you are going to begin eating and to show appreciation for the preparation of the food. It has become my favorite word to say because every time I say it, I know I am about to feast on some incredible food. Below are just a few of the excellent home cooked dishes I have been sampling.
